- There are many lost and displaced pets after Hurricane Ike. Be
careful when dealing with lost, frightened and possibly sick or
contaminated pets. Call your local animal control agency to report
lost or aggressive animals. Animal Control Officers will be
searching for lost pets as soon as it's safe. Leave animal rescue to
people trained in handling frightened or aggressive animals. If
you've been affected by Hurricane Ike and you have pets of your own,
here are some tips for after the storm.
- If you've lost a pet, contact your local animal control
agency immediately. Animal Control Officers will be out in
neighborhoods rescuing lost or loose pets.
- Call your local animal control agency to report loose or
aggressive animals.
- Check your home and fences for damage and block any loose
fences, broken windows or downed fences.
- Check your yard or pasture for trash that could injure your
pet or livestock.
- If someone found your pet, they may have taken it to a local
animal welfare shelter. Be sure to call those shelters as well.
- During this stressful time, keep your pet on a regular schedule
with regular food. Don't feed your pet people food and make sure
there is a quiet, safe place to rest. If behavior problems or other
signs of stress persist or become worrisome, contact your
veterinarian.
- Two animal-friendly shelters are available for those animals
displaced by Hurricane Ike:
- 1st United Methodist Church of Humble, 800 Main St., Humble,
Texas 77338
- Lamb of God Lutheran Church, 1400 FM 1960 East Bypass,
Humble, Texas 77338
